CA-Sen: Fiorina Fundraising Fail

Failed corporate CEO Carly Fiorina--who thinks she's qualified to take on Senator Barbara Boxer despite not even bothering to vote for much of her adult life--sent out a press release yesterday touting her enormous cash on hand numbers:

SACRAMENTO, CA – U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina today announced that, after a strong first 60 days as a declared candidate, her campaign enters the 2010 election year with more than $2.7 million cash on hand.

Notice a very important word that doesn't appear along with the $2.7 million here or elsewhere: raised. That's because she didn't raise it. According to sources within the Boxer campaign, Carly actually only has $200K in the bank right now--meaning that she just loaned herself the other $2.5 million. And the Orange County Register agrees:

Republican Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett Packard CEO who wants to challenge Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer this fall put out a press release this morning revealing that she has put $2.5 million of her own money into her campaign.

This is especially noteworthy because Fiorina is now a bald-faced liar:

"She's not going to write big checks for her campaign like [GOP CA-Gov candidates] Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner," Miller said. "She has never made any statement that she would self-fund her campaign."

The NRSC's Brian Walsh tells us that they "yes we've been aware (of the non-self-funding) -- that was not news to us."

Maybe in Carly's mind, $2.5 million doesn't count as big after getting a $21.5 million golden parachute as a reward for cratering HP's stock price. Of course, it's not surprising that Fiorina is already having to dump a pile of cash during primary season: she still has to get through her primary with darling of the far right Chuck Devore, who reported raising over 700K at last year's 3rd quarter deadline. Senator Boxer's Q3 numbers, by contrast? over $4 million raised and over $6 million COH.

And to make things more interesting, former Congressman Tom Campbell, who was part of the GOP gubernatorial primary field, will announce Thursday that he is dropping his Governor bid to run for the Senate instead. Pass the popcorn.
